Building Empathy Through Experience: Students Explore Inclusion in Hands-On Workshop

This week, in partnership with the JCC and Alpert Jewish Family Service (AJFS), students in grades JrK–8 participated in a hands-on, empathy-building workshop. This interactive experience was designed to simulate the challenges faced by individuals with a range of exceptionalities. Through a variety of activities, such as sensory-based tasks, communication barriers, and motor-skill challenges, students gained insight into what it may feel like to navigate daily life and learning with a disability.

Following the activities, students engaged in an age-appropriate, guided group discussion to reflect on both the emotional and cognitive impact of these experiences. Together, they explored ways to create a more inclusive classroom environment and identified meaningful strategies to support peers with diverse needs. This program aims to foster empathy, deepen understanding, and inspire thoughtful, actionable support within our school community.
