Seacamp: Sixth Grade Examines Marine Life in the Keys

Our IB middle school students embarked on an incredible overnight trip and experiential learning. The sixth-grade students applied their science knowledge by immersing themselves in marine life at SeaCamp in the Florida Keys. While there, they studied the sea life found in the ocean, including Cassiopea, algae, hermit crabs, and squid. They learned about fouling communities, which are organisms found on artificial surfaces. They caught some Cassiopea and performed organism-friendly experiments testing the effects of changes in water salinity and temperature on the Cassiopea. The students also had the opportunity to snorkel in the Atlantic Ocean and observe the coral and schools of fish below them. They ended the trip with a bonfire where they roasted marshmallows, ate s'mores, and studied astronomy. They had a blast!
