March Book Madness

In this interdisciplinary unit, the 5th grade students paired up and read two books from the March Book Madness Sweet 16 list. As they read, they analyzed the books, determined the conflict and theme, and created basketball teams based on the books.

In Design class, the students began by analyzing the logos of popular stores, brands and products.  They discussed what makes a brand popular and what causes consumers to purchase those products. They then learned the meaning behind certain symbols and colors before beginning to create their own logos to represent the March madness book that they and their team read. Each student created their own team name, and logo, and chose a specific number to represent their book.

To conclude the project, the students created a Canva slide presentation about their books, which they shared in a pep-rally style setting with their classmates and parents. It was a great and fun way to end the unit!
